ANOTHER ‘RAMY’ OCTOBER
October 14, 2024
Every October, I rewatch Ramy on Hulu. I never plan to, but I am pulled back in to the conundrums of life as an Egyptian Muslim in North Jersey. Created by Ramy Youssef, comedian & actor, the series follows a fictional ‘Ramy’ through a number of excruciating spiritual crises.
To what do I relate, as a faithless white person, you might ask? Firstly - I don’t believe art needs to be ‘relatable’ to be appreciated. Do you have lived experience as Spiderman? No, but you enjoyed those movies, right? Then suspend your disbelief for comedy about Muslims. It’s easy!
I relate to spiritual crisis. Despite an agnostic, atheistic home life, I attended a Lutheran K-8. There, my predilection for dread was fueled by the morbid Old Testament, & my classmates’ lucid belief in eternal life, or eternal damnation. I only ever believed in the latter.
As a kid, I obsessed over ever having doing harm. I used to wake my parents up in the early morning to ask things like, “Remember when we were fishing on LBI, & we released the fish? What if the hooks made them bleed in the water, then a predator ate them?”
“Otis, what?”
Unthinkingly - my earnest, good intentions had monstrous implications for the fish. Plummeted back into its liquid atmosphere, shocked & terrified & bleeding. How could I be so careless?!
Ramy makes extreme decisions in the hopes of achieving absolution. These lead to hilarious, jaw-dropping, or tragic consequences. These he tries to obfuscate, re-frame, & lie about.
Ramy makes me laugh. Ramy makes me cry. Ramy makes me think about life, & wonder about God.
‘UNLEARNING’
July 30, 2024
I wish we could all do this. If I could beam my problems out of my face, I bet I’d be a homeowner by now. Apparently a lot of other people share my feelings.
This Bigelow City comic got a lot of TikTok love.
Not All Advice is Useful
April 10, 2024
Try not to meet your idols, especially if you have OCD. Lately, I try not to hold strangers to a higher standard than my friends.
My goal in life is to be totally moral. That seems reasonable, right? No, of course not - but my brain loves to seek danger patterns.
I was drawn to auto-fiction at 20. The ability to transmute the banal beats, joys, & heartbreaks of life without the dressings of narrative - there was nothing I wanted to do more.
Have you seen the Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show?Everyone who sees it has a lot to say - myself included. In just two episodes, I’ve seen Jerrod try to bare his heart to Tyler the Creator, heard his mom’s voicemails, watched him cheat on his boyfriend, & then lie to his face in couples therapy.
I’m glad someone is making art like this & that I’m not him.
Everything I write is (unbearably) vulnerable. As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized the value in letting your ego inhabit the environment of your work. Invisible, but affecting - just like radiation.
The Website Reborn
Feb 25, 2024
We are back online. It’s been too long, internet. There has been no otisroffman.com for several years. Good thing I have a strange name (R-O-F as in “Frank” - F - M - A - N), so I get to keep my old url. I am still ironing out exactly how I’d like this site to run, and look, but I think it’s off to a great start.
The site is meant to host all my professional and academic work, as well as my artistic portfolio. If you’d like to contact me for any reason, please go ahead and use the contact form below.
Bigelow is a family name. I called the blog Bigelow City because I can’t resist absurd settings. All my comics take place in the capital of Roffmana, Bigelow City.
I’ll be building out this blog to host illustrations, updates, & my rantings & ravings. Please keep checking in! I love an audience.
